Public lecture: 'The Dismissal 33 Years on: Maintaining My Rage or Showing My Age?'Posted on 08.10.2008
School of Social Sciences and Psychology Forum
2.00pm, Tuesday October 21, 2008 in Room G372 Footscray Park Campus
Speaker: Dr Matt Harvey, Lecturer in Constitutional Law, Victoria Law School
Chair: Professor Carolyn Noble, School of Social Sciences and Psychology
Topic: 'The Dismissal 33 Years on: Maintaining My Rage or Showing My Age?'
On November 11, 1975, the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr, made constitutional history by dismissing the Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, appointing the Leader of the Opposition, Malcolm Fraser as “caretaker” Prime Minister, and dissolving both houses of Parliament. Whitlam urged his supporters to “maintain your rage”, but he lost the next two elections. Has anyone maintained their rage for 33 years? If so, rage at what?
In the context of the revival of proposals for a republic in Australia, Dr Harvey looks back at the Dismissal, finds reasons for both maintaining rage and cooling it, and suggests arrangements to ensure that the situation does not arise under a republic.
