Public lecture: 'The Dismissal 33 Years on: Maintaining My Rage or Showing My Age?'
Posted on 08.10.2008School of Social Sciences and Psychology Forum

2.00pm, Tuesday October 21, 2008 in Room G372 Footscray Park Campus

Speaker: Dr Matt Harvey, Lecturer in Constitutional Law, Victoria Law School

Chair: Professor Carolyn Noble, School of Social Sciences and Psychology

Topic: 'The Dismissal 33 Years on: Maintaining My Rage or Showing My Age?'

On November 11, 1975, the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr, made constitutional history by dismissing the Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, appointing the Leader of the Opposition, Malcolm Fraser as “caretaker” Prime Minister, and dissolving both houses of Parliament. Whitlam urged his supporters to “maintain your rage”, but he lost the next two elections. Has anyone maintained their rage for 33 years? If so, rage at what?

In the context of the revival of proposals for a republic in Australia, Dr Harvey looks back at the Dismissal, finds reasons for both maintaining rage and cooling it, and suggests arrangements to ensure that the situation does not arise under a republic.

ALL WELCOME

MUSIC FOR A CAUSE – SUPPORT THE EAST TIMOR STUDENT ASSOCIATION
Posted on 18.09.2008Where: Victoria University’s Toniq Bar, M001 Footscray Park

When: Thursday September 25th 12pm – 2pm

Come along and support the East Timor Student Association with a fantastic live performance by Ego Lemos, East Timor Student Association President. There will be a happy hour at the bar from 12pm to 2pm and free finger food. A GOLD coin donation for the support of the EAST TIMOR STUDENT ASSOCIATION would be greatly appreciated.

Live Performance Management students at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus will be hosting the event aimed at raising awareness of the East Timor Student Association and also of student bands within the community at Victoria University.

The event will be a live performance performed by Ego Lemos who plays an acoustic set of original music and has played at many festivals throughout Australia, most recently at the Darwin Festival.

Ego is the lead singer of East Timor’s most popular contemporary band, Cinco do Oriente. He is from East Timor and studies at VU.

Grab your friends and come along for a lunch time with a difference. Help your fellow students by supporting this great cause. You will enjoy a great live performance, finger food and fantastic drink prices. All we ask for is a gold coin donation to go towards assisting the East Timor Student Association.

Volunteer Photographers Wanted

Re: Required Reading
was posted by Brian on the Studying forum'Megan, Hi. Some suggestions. Required readings could be accessible via WebCT or E-Reserve (depending on which one is used by your lecturer). If you have no luck there, you could ask one of the Reference Librarians to help with locating this speech - it might be accessible on the net. Or you could google (search by the title of the speech and use quotation marks). Send me an e-mail if you have no luck. Brian'
